William D. “Bill” Leftridge, Jr., 85, of Effingham, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 7, 2014, at a local hospital. Mr. Leftridge was born in Maryland, a son of the late William Dennis Leftridge, Sr. and Clara Reedy Leftridge.He was a veteran of the US Air Force and later retired from Carolina Fencing.Mr. Leftridge was a member of Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church.He was a member of the American Legion Post 1 and twice held the office of Commander and had been District Commander. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars #3181, BPOE and was a Mason. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, William D. Leftridge, III and Donald Leftridge and his daughter, Deborah E. Leftridge. Surviving are his wife of twelve years, Ethel Haynes Leftridge; his son, Daniel B. (Melinda) Leftridge of Florence; his daughters, Katherine L. (Donald) Cannon of Fayetteville,NC, Danielle Leftridge and Cindy (Jara)Miller, both of North Carolina; his step-son, Bruce (Debbie) Brown of Silver Springs, FL; his brothers, Charles Leftridge of Felton, PA and Roger Leftridge of Bayard, NE; his sisters, Shirley Greer of Hurdle Mills, NC, Lois Harward of Bel Air, MD, Ann Heisey of Okemos, MI, Sally Sexton of LaPlata, MD and Phyliss Walker of Topeka, KS; his grandchildren, Taylor, Trevor, Stephen, Peirce, Curtis, Christina, Danny and Robby; and his great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Bryson, Hayden, Blake and Gavin. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church.Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Elon Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Saturday at the funeral home.
