William “Bill” James, 91, of Effingham, SC, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Mr. James was born in Effingham, SC, the son of the late William James and Allie McLaughlin James. He was a graduate of Tans Bay High School, Spartanburg Jr. College, and Francis Marion University, where he received a bachelor’s degree. Mr. James worked as a Research Technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 30 years, up until his retirement in 1987. He served in the U.S. Army for 42 years, serving in the Korean war and operation Desert Storm, and he retired as a Master Seargent. Mr. James was a member and past master of the Amity Lodge AF+AM. He was also President of the Pee Dee Shrine Club. He was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. James is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather by his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy W. James; sons, Donald W. (Luann) James, of Elgin, TX, and Joseph Dale (Michelle) James, of Swinton, TX; daughters, Renee (Scot) Sheely, of Irmo, SC, and Sharon (Barry) Anderson, of Beaufort, SC; eleven grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Florence National Cemetery with military honors and masonic rites.
