William Charles Devane

William Charles "Pickle" DeVane Florence, SC William Charles "Pickle" DeVane, 76, of Florence, died Friday, April 13, 2012 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mr. DeVane was born in Florence, SC a son of the late James C. and Thelma Marshall DeVane.He was a charter member of Dawsey United Methodist Church serving as a Lay Leader, choir member and Sunday School teacher.He was a certified Local Lay Speaker for the Methodist Conference.Mr. DeVane graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1954 and from Florence Darlington Technical College in 1972 with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration.He was a veteran of the US Navy serving from 1954 – 1958.He retired in 1993 from E.I. DuPont as a supervisor after 32 years of service.After his retirement, he was employed at Florence Darlington Tech in the Continuing Education Department as a Program Developer, Program Coordinator and Instructor. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, David DeVane, James "Rock" DeVane and Carl B. DeVane. Surviving are his beloved wife of 51 years, Dorothy Collins DeVane of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Sabrina DeVane of Athens, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Lori Elizabeth DeVane Melton and Phillip Melton of Columbia, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Crystal DeVane of Florence; granddaughters, Amber D. (Harris) Anderson of Darlington, Kelsey Melton, Jordyn Melton and Kendal DeVane Melton, all of Columbia; granddaughter, Taylor DeVane and grandson, Jacob Collins DeVane, both of Florence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Dawsey United Methodist Church, PO Box 12461, Florence, SC29504. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 16, 2012 in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
