Willa Mae McElveen Powell, 82, of Florence, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, May 31, 2014 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Peace Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Mrs. Powell was born in Florence, SC a daughter of the late Paul McElveen and Gertrude Foxworth McElveen. She was a member of Peace Free Will Baptist Church and the Senior Sunday School Class. She was best known as “Grandma Mae” and for the many Pound Cakes she baked through the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and 2 sisters. Surviving are her husband, David T. Powell of the home; son, David (Anne) Scurry of Effingham; daughters, Stephanie (Terry) Wilson of Calif., Patricia “Pat” (Sonny) Myers and Faye (Stanley) Butler both of Florence; step-son, David J. Powell of Darlington; step-daughter, Tina Marie Powell of Darlington; grandchildren, Jamie Lynn (Brian) Bolton, Jenny, Beth and Tommy Wilson, Doug (Donna) Myers and Jennifer Myers, Stacy (Chris) Coleman and Brent (Kimberly) Butler; 9 great-grandchildren;3 special canine companions she called “Her Boys”, Henry, Bubba and Buddy. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home.
