Walter F. Fisher FLORENCE Walter F. Fisher, 85, of Florence, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2010 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mr. Fisher was born on December 6, 1925 in Williamsville, NY a son of the late George and Ethel Fisher.After graduating from Williamsville High school in 1943 he went to work at DuPont’s Cellophane plant in Buffalo, NY. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1944. After service, he went back to work with DuPont and was assigned to a team that developed the first commercial rolls of Mylar. He moved to Circleville Ohio in 1954 as part of the startup team for DuPont’s first Mylar manufacturing plant and then to Florence in 1960 when the Florence Mylar film plant was being built. Walt retired from DuPont in 1988 after 43 years of service. While he had many accomplishments during his career, one of his proudest was being a co-founder of the DuPont Employees Credit Union were he served for 34 years as treasurer. At this years annual meeting he was honored by the board by being named “Treasurer Emeritus”. The boardroom in the new DuPont Employees credit union building was also named in his honor. Walt was a 50 year member of Central United Methodist Church. He volunteered as a youth leader, Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, church bus driver, delivered meals on wheels, and sang in the church choir. As a young father, he enjoyed many family camping trips, boating, and singing in the Florence Harmony Chorus. As the kids grew older, he and his wife became very active in square dancing and traveled on many occasions to square dance conventions across the U.S. He was a square dance caller for three clubs, one in Hartsville, Conway and Myrtle Beach. He was also a charter member of the Prom-O-Nabors square dance club here in Florence. He enjoyed calling at nursing homes and special events and exposing folks of all ages to the fun of square dancing. Walt loved to play golf and bridge with friends. He and his wife Gloria loved to travel and took many trips across this country and Europe.He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, his parents, his brother, George Fisher, and his two sisters, Laura Fisher and Marion F. Moynihan. Surviving are his five children, Mark (Debbi) Fisher of Findlay, Ohio, Don (Casey) Fisher of Snellville, GA, Tim (Christine) Fisher of Florence, Margie (Jerry) Broadway of Charlotte, NC and Jeff Fisher of Florence; ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church, PO Box 87, Florence, SC 29503 or to a charity of one's choice. A private entombment will be held in the church columbarium. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Walt’s life at 11 AM on Tuesday December 28th at Central United Methodist Church, 225 W. Cheves Street in Florence. The family will receive friends an hour before and after the service in the church commons area.
