Wallace Laverne Avin, Sr. Florence, S.C. Wallace Laverne Avin, Sr., 80, of Florence, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2012 at his residence after a short illness. Mr. Avin was born in Florence County, a son of the late Perry M. and Maggie Johnson Avin.He was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church, the Zerubbabel Lodge #15 AFM, the Alee Shrine of Savannah, GA, and the Pirate Shrine Club of Savannah.He was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean conflict.He was a member of the VFW Post 3181. He retired in 1989 as the signal shop manager for CSX Railroad in Savannah after 38 years of service. He later worked for S.C. Central Railroad in Darlington for 6 years. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Martha Anne Haynes Avin, sons, Wallace L. "Chip" Avin, Jr. of Savannah and James P. "Chuck" (Debra) Avin of Darlington; daughter, Elizabeth A."Beth"(Terry) Anderson of Metter, GA; twelve grandchildren;ten great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Ed (Kenny) Avin of Summerton, and sister-in-law, NellieRichardson Avin of Florence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Lois Avin Hobbs, Ruth Avin Smoak, and Gladys Avin Toney, and by 2 brothers, P.M. Avin, Jr. and Aubrey Avin. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 5, 2012 in Greenwood Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
