Virginia Smith Turner Cox Florence, SC Virginia Smith Turner Cox, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, November 13, 2012. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Immanuel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Mrs. Virginia was born in Florence Co., SC a daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Lizzie McAllister Smith. She was a charter member of First Free Will Baptist Church, where she attended for a number of years. Upon Marriage to Mr. Cox, she moved her membership to Immanuel Baptist Church, where she taught the Effie Flowers Sunday School Class and was also a member of the Effie Flowers Circle. She was a Sunday School Teacher for over 60 years. She loved her Lord and gave of herself completely to His service. She was active in all facets of the Church until her health failed her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Norwood Turner, Sr., who died September 23, 1977; son, Joseph Randolph "Randy" Turner, Sr.; brothers, Thad, Sanders, Frederick, J.C. and J.H. Smith, Jr.; sisters, Ruth Lee, Roberta Allen. Surviving are her son, Norwood Turner, Jr., of Florence; sister, Clara E. Brannon of Fort Mill, SC; grandchildren, Randolph (Andrea) Turner of Florence, Melissa T.(Jay) Potter of Woodstock, Ga., Melanie T. (Stephen) Keen of Mt. Pleasant, SC; great-grandchildren, Anna Beth Potter, Wesley B. Potter, Olivia Grace Keen and James "Turner" Keen and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Commander Nursing Center for their care over the last month of her journey, also the staff of the 6th floor Central at Carolinas Hospital System and to Elizabeth, Nancy, Melissa, Cindy, Roberta and Faye, to name a few who made her last days bearable. To Dr. Booth who showed much compassion for her during this difficult time. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at the Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 306 Cherokee Road, Florence, SC29501 or to First Free Will Baptist Church, 2624 W. Palmetto Street, Florence, SC29501.
