Verna Lacene Newell Holland, widow of LeRoy E Holland, Jr, died February 15, 2016 at the McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC. Lacene was born in Mounds, IL, July 17, 1923 to the late Clara Charlotte and M. R. “Bud” Newell. During WW II she was employed by Western Cartridge Company in Alton, IL, manufacturing small arms and ammunitions for the troops.It was in Alton that she met LeRoy and they were married in 1944 in San Antonio, TX.In 1963 they relocated to Florence, SC for LeRoy’s employment at Stone Container.They were married for 52 years. Lacene was an avid gardener, sharing her day lilies and various plants and flowers with other long-time gardeners or those starting out. She was an exceptional seamstress, upholsterer, painter and carpenter to name a few.Her love for reading began at an early age and her thirst for knowledge in the pages of her Bible, encyclopedias and National Geographic continued until her eyesight made it impossible to read herself.A close neighbor referred to her as a “walking encyclopedia”! Lacene and LeRoy were members of Highland Park UMC and attended the Wesley Bible Sunday school class. They served at the Manna House and visited local nursing homes with Lacene baking the monthly birthday cakes for the residents. Lacene read her Bible and quietly walked her faith, supporting her family and friends through her continued prayers to the Almighty. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister,Infant Virginia Newell, brother, Richard Newell ofEdmonds, WA; sister Rosalie Byrd of Florence, SC. She is survived by her daughter Diane Sansbury and son- in- law Fred of Florence; Grandson Chris Sansbury and fiancée Beverly Bagwell of Florence; Grandson Reed Sansbury and wife Niki of Florence; Great Granddaughter Victoria Holland Sansbury and Great Grandson Brennon Reed Sansbury of Florence. Brother John “Buddy” Newell and wife Wilma of Weir, KS; sisters Glenda Smith of Oswego, KS and Rae Meriaux and husband Richard; and sister-in-law Verla Schroeder of Brighton, IL. Services will be held at Highland Park UMC, 1300 Second Loop Road, Florence, SC, Monday, February 22, 2016 at 2pm officiated by Pastors Mike Henderson and Robert Norris.Family will greet friends in the Narthex of the church from 1pm to 2pm. Burial will be at Florence Memorial Gardens, 3320 South Cashua Drive, Florence, SC29501. Stoudemire-Dowling Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
