Thomas James Hewitt, 84, of Florence, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, of complications from surgery. He was born a son of the late Blanche Sellers Hewitt and Heyward Hewitt.He was a veteran of US Air Force and attended Amanda Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mr. Hewitt first retired from Union Carbide and then retired, after 28 years, as the owner/operator of the Florence Darlington Dragstrip.He was an avid and productive fisherman and enjoyed having a fish fry almost as much as fishing.He had many specials friends who were family by choice. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Lucy Altman. Mr. Hewitt is survived by his wife of 60 years, who he always referred to as his bride, Charlene Damron Hewitt; sons, Michael (Vickie) Hewitt and Steven Hewitt; honorary son, Kevin (Lori) Sattele; grandchildren, Brooke (Josh) Inabinet, Kayden and Khloe; and Amber (C.J.) Crawford, Nickolas, Ian, Trenton, and Peyton; special nieces, Dana (Kent) Poston, Celeste (Jack) Bryant and Lisa Garland; and his canine companion, Suzy. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.Burial will follow at Hewitt Cemetery. Family will greet friends following the committal at the cemetery. Due to the current COVID-19 concerns, social distancing will be observed.
