Steven Gregory Holmes

April 12, 1955 — February 16, 2026

Greg passed away on February 16, 2026, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, with his beloved wife, Laurel, by his side.

Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on April 12, 1955, Greg was the third son of Isabel (Stellings) and Elias Mayo Holmes . He shared his life with his wife, Laurel Holmes, with whom he built a marriage grounded in loyalty, steadiness, and quiet devotion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabel and Mayo Holmes, and by his siblings, Mayo and Mark Holmes.

Greg graduated from Hoggard High School in 1973. He also attended Mitchell Community College. Throughout his career, he worked in the Plumbing / Water Supply industry with Hughes Supply, Pump & Lighting Supply, and Vellano Brothers Supply before ultimately returning to the Holmes family farm in Fork, South Carolina, where he retired surrounded by family.

Greg was the kind of man who simply showed up. If something needed to be done, he did it. If someone needed help, he was there. His life was defined by hard work, keeping his word, and caring for his family.

He showed his love through action. He learned to play bridge with Laurel’s Parents because he knew she wanted to share the game with them. He even learned to sail for her, showing his love through curiosity and dedication. If something mattered to the people he loved, it mattered to Greg.

He was a lifelong fisherman, devoted gardener, and passionate tinkerer who found joy in renovating, fixing, and improving things. He valued steady work, time with family, and the simple rhythms of life.

He is survived by his wife, Laurel Holmes; his daughter, Stephanie Holmes; his siblings, Chris Holmes and Laurie Hendricks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Greg’s memory are encouraged to plant a perennial flower - something that will return year after year, steady and enduring.

No funeral services will be held.
