Silvanus Taco "S.T." Gilbert, II Charlotte, NC Silvanus Taco "S.T." Gilbert, II, left his family and friends for his eternal life in Heaven on March 1, 2011 after 91 ½ years with us. Mr. Gilbert was born in Gilbertown, Alabama, a son of the late Silvanus Taco Gilbert and Leila Gilbert Brown and married the love of his life, Virginia Saylor Gilbert on June 6, 1952.He graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1947 with a business degree and then worked as a comptroller for Sears until his retirement.Subsequently he was employed by the Florence Housing Authority and taught accounting and tax courses at Florence-Darlington Technical College.He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.S.T. held many offices in the BPOE, including the top offices at both the local and state level.He lived in Florence from 1953 until 2007, when he moved to Charlotte.He was a man who loved his Lord, his family and who lived to serve others.He will be sorely missed, but will be remembered lovingly and joyfully for the respect, integrity, unconditional love and sense of playfulness and fun he brought into the lives of everyone who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia, who died February 21, 2008. Surviving are his children, Silvia Gilbert Middleton of Concord, NC, Virginia Gilbert Dickert of North Augusta, SC, S.T. Gilbert III of Reno, Nevada, Susan Deenee Gilbert Yarbrough of Waxhaw, NC and Robin Gilbert Smolenski of Oakland, NJ; grandchildren, Lindsey Middleton, John Middleton, III, Donald Dickert, Fletcher Dickert,S.T. Gilbert, IV, Saylor Gilbert, E.J. Gilbert, Martina Gilbert, Leigh Yarbrough, Gilbert Smolenski, Jewell Virginia Smolenski and Caroline Smolenski; brother, Robert Gilbert of Lutcher, LA and sister, Nita Mosley of Colorado Springs, CO. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 5, 2011 in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.Entombment will follow in the Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 PM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service. Please sign the guest registry for Mr. Gilbert at the obit section of www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
