Shirley Hyman Brasington

June 21, 1932 — January 22, 2020

Shirley Hyman Brasington, 87, of Florence, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020. In her childhood, she lived on a farm in Pamplico, SC. Her parents were Ruby Turner Hyman Walters and Furman Hyman. She had 3 siblings Carl Hyman, Betty Graham, and Raymond Lee. Eldest of the four, Shirley cared for and helped raise her siblings. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Tommie Brasington. Both were members of Eastside Christian Church (formerly Bethesda Presbyterian). where they had many dear friends. Tommie and Shirley shared love languages such as laughing, good naturedly picking on others, and giving to others generously. They were always giving gifts to family and friends, making sure they took care of others over themselves. Ever sharp and witty, Shirley liked you if she could crack a joke on you. She liked you even more if you could crack one back! Shirley was a tough but caring mother to four sons who survive her: Monroe McElveen (BJ), Michael McElveen (Frankie), Kevin Brasington (Lisa), and Steve Brasington (Sheri). As a mother of four boys would, Shirley loved to laugh and fondly remember the stories of her sons’ shenanigans. She loved them dearly. In her later years, Monroe visited Shirley at least once a day to help care for her. He walked uphill, in the snow, both ways to do so. He blessed her as she blessed him. She was a grandmother to the children of her sons and opened her arms to others as well. Her heart was big enough for all, and she was also blessed with great-grandchildren. She is now united with Jesus, her Savior, and reunited with Tommie, whom she has missed for many years. We will fondly remember Shirley for her intelligence, her laughter (like the silent laughter that made her grin and shake), her remarkable generosity, and her love for her family and her friends. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am Friday, January 24, 2020, in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Family will receive friends from 10:00am – 11:00am Friday at the funeral home.
