Rudolph Belton Hughes

Rudolph Belton Hughes beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather passed away peacefully at McLeod Hospice House on Sunday September 20, 2026.

Rudy, as he was known to everyone, was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was born in Cayce, South Carolina on November 29, 1938. Rudy graduated from Brooklyn-Cayce High School. After graduating he served in the US Navy. After he was honorably discharged, he married the love of his life Sylvia Brooks. They were married on January 23, 1960 and spent the next 66 years by each other’s side.

Rudy transferred his family to Florence in 1968 and was employed by Mercury Motor Express. Later he became the Traffic Manager for Lay-Z-Boy until his retirement. Rudy was a person with varied interests. He was an accomplished carpenter, wood worker and clock repair man. After retirement you could find him in his wood shop making any number of things or repairing clocks. Rudy and Sylvia were volunteers at McLeod Hospital for many years.

Whenever a person saw Rudy he always had a smile. He was always quick to help a neighbor or friend, especially if it meant making something for them in his shop.

Rudy was predeceased by his parents Belton and Ruby Hughes, and his sister Mildred Hannah.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sylvia Hughes; daughter, Laurie (John) Crouse and grandson, Rivers Crouse.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2026, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Family will receive friends on Saturday at the funeral home from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Burial will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
