Roger John Wiechmann

November 14, 1939 — November 8, 2025

Florence

Roger John Wiechmann, age 85, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, after a lengthy battle against chronic heart and chronic kidney disease.

Roger was born on November 14, 1939, in Saginaw, Michigan. His family moved from Saginaw to Lansing, Michigan, during Roger’s elementary school years; and he graduated from Sexton High School in Lansing. After receiving his B.S. degree in Industrial Arts Education from Michigan State University, he taught mathematics and science in Waterford Township, Michigan, where he met the love of his life, Phyllis. They were married on July 3, 1964, in Waterford, Michigan.

After teaching for a year, Roger became an indexable cutting-tool engineer for Futurmill and then for Kysor Machine Tool Engineering. After several household moves in Ohio and Michigan, Roger and Phyllis settled in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey where he worked for Sandvik as Chief Engineer and then for Mapal. After a 40-year engineering career, Roger retired and in 2004, Roger and Phyllis moved to Barnegat, New Jersey where they enjoyed traveling and where Roger volunteered for the Barnegat Ambulance Corp and at the local hospital. In 2014, Roger and Phyllis moved to Florence, South Carolina to be near their youngest child, Kristin, and her family.

On July 3, 2025, Roger and Phyllis celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

As a youth, Roger was very involved as a Boy Scout; and his friends from Troop 194 became lifelong friends. His interest in Boy Scouts continued throughout his life as he supported his son’s and grandsons’ involvement. Roger was also quite the handyman, doing projects around the house, helping his children with various home improvement projects, and using his expertise by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Roger was a member of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church (TEPC) in Florence and volunteered countless hours for Habitat for Humanity and OM Ships and participated in a church mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis Ann (Lyon) Wiechmann; three children: Kevin Scott Wiechmann (Nancy), Karin Sue Wiechmann, and Kristin Sue Winters (Patrick); and three grandchildren: Marian Nicole Winters, Colin Andrew John Wiechmann, and Dakota Jakob Nathan Wiechmann. He is also survived by his two sisters: Janet Kolk and Nancy Haveman (Mark). Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Charles John Wiechmann and Marian Lois (Cartwright) Wiechmann and brother-in-law, James Kolk.

Memorial Service for Roger will be held at Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 1021 S. Ebenezer Rd, Florence, SC 29501, with visitation at 1 p.m. and Celebration of Life at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TEPC for mission work close to Roger’s heart.
