Roberta Rhodes Thornton

ROBERTA RHODES THORNTON EFFINGHAM, S.C. ROBERTA RHODES THORNTON, 89, of Effingham, joined her Lord and Savior on March 24, 2013. Mrs. Thornton was born in Effingham, SC, a daughter of the late Lawrence Rhodes and Fannie McLaughlin Rhodes.She graduated from McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing as a registered nurse and was a dedicated employee of McLeod Regional Medical Center for over fifty years.Mrs. Thornton was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and served as the teacher for God’s SonFlowers Nursery Class for over twenty-five years.She loved her grandchildren and her dogs and loved spending time with them. She is preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Hugh B. Thornton, Jr.; four brothers and four sisters. Surviving are her children, Hugh “Bernie” B. Thornton, III, of Effingham, Lawrence (Vicki) R.Thornton, of Florence;brother, Frank Rhodes of Baltimore, MD; a daughter-in-law, Susan Thornton of Scranton; her grandchildren, HM3 Jeffrey ThorntonUSN,Kaneohe, HI, Maggie Mae Thornton of Effingham, Lauren Thornton of Charleston, and Hugh “Bubba” (Jenny) B. Thornton, IV, of Effingham; great-grandchild, Karsyn Thornton of Effingham;sisters-in-law, Barbara Sylvester, Peggy Thornton and Sybil Voth; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dorothy McKnight and Vicki Porter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Immanuel Baptist Church.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
