Robert Alexander Hathcock

August 13, 1929 — January 27, 2022

Robert Alexander Hathcock went to be with his Lord on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at McLeod Hospice House. Born August 13, 1929, at home in Norwood, rural Stanly County, NC, he was the third of six children born to Guy and Lucy (Aldridge) Hathcock. As a child Bob was known to be mischievous and fun-loving. He had been the faithful husband of Edith Mills Hathcock since their marriage on June 4, 1955. His wife and soulmate preceded him in death on July 14, 2021. Bob was beloved by all who knew him, with a ready smile, gentle spirit, and kind comment extended to everyone he met. Mr. Hathcock is survived by his son and daughter in law, Mike and DeLys Hathcock. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Daniel Guy and Robert Jeffrey. He was adored grandfather to three grandchildren: Michael Benjamin (Emily) Hathcock; Mary Rebekah (Alec) Sutton; Joseph Allen (Rachel) Hathcock; and nine great-grandchildren: Audrey Marquis, Rhett Hathcock, Pearl Hathcock, Molly Hathcock, Asher Sutton, Jackson Sutton, Judah Sutton, Xander Sutton, and Rowan Hathcock, due to arrive March 18. His amiable nature made him a favorite of dozens of nieces and nephews, church family, neighbors, and co-workers. Uncle Bob and Aunt Edie were the first to arrive at family reunions, weddings, funerals, and other family events, and were always immediately surrounded by family members, laughing, and exchanging stories. Popular and athletic, Bob graduated from Norwood High School and joined the Navy, in which he served his country for four years. Some of his favorite stories were from his experiences in the Navy while stationed in Guam aboard the USS Pritchett. After his Navy years, he began his career with Dupont at the Savannah River plant in Aiken, SC. He met the love of his life in Norwood soon after beginning his job. He retired in 1984 from Dupont in Florence, SC. Bob was a faithful, loving, loyal husband, father, and grandfather throughout his life, and he was an avid gardener for sixty-five years, always sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He was also a faithful member of Mizpah Baptist church since 1964 and served as a deacon for many years. He always enjoyed fellowship with other church members, playing ball, maintaining the grounds, and being a part of facility projects. The family will be receiving visitors at Mizpah Baptist Church, 223 North Price Road at 10:00 on Saturday, February 5, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. There will be no graveside service. Donations in his memory may be made to McLeod Hospice House, P.O. Box 100551, Florence, SC, 29506, or Mizpah Baptist Church, 233 N. Price Road, Florence, SC, 29506. Please sign the tribute wall for the family at www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
