Richard Donald "Don" Whetstone

RICHARD DONALD “DON” WHETSTONE FLORENCE, SC RICHARD DONALD “DON” WHETSTONE, 81, of Florence, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Mr. Whetstone was born in St. Matthews, SC a son of the late Earle Dreher Whetstone and Bessie Shuler Whetstone.He graduated from the University of South Carolina, worked as a Special Agent for the United States Treasury (ATF) for 25 years and retired from Farm Bureau Insurance as a Fraud Investigator.He was a veteran of the US Air Force and a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church.He volunteered his time and talents to improve the lives of others through church sponsored community home repairs.He also used his woodworking talents in hand-crafting furniture and replicas of shorebirds that he enjoyed giving to friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, David Earle Whetstone. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Sara Griggs Whetstone of Florence; sons, Donald Dreher (Sarah) Whetstone of Schwenksville, PA and John Richard (Cathy) Whetstone of Lexington, SC; four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd., Suite 100, W. Columbia, SC 29169 or to Highland Park United Methodist Church, 1300 Second Loop Road, Florence, SC 29505. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, December 22, 2014 at West End Cemetery in St. Matthews, SC. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Highland Park United Methodist Church.The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
