THE REV. LUCY T. DAVIS Florence, S.C. THE REV. LUCY TEDDER DAVIS, 88, of Florence, passed away Monday, November 08, 2010 at her residence after an extended illness. Rev. Davis was born in the Sardis Community of Florence County, SC a daughter of the late Nolan Heyward Tedder and Lena Bell Locklair Tedder.She was a charter member of South Florence Baptist Church where she served as Youth Sunday School teacher, as the first Deaconess in a Baptist church in Florence and as a chairman of several committees, was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and had been a pastor at Dawsey United Methodist Church, Florence (1989 – 1996), was founder and director of the House of Hope of the Pee Dee (1996 – 2000), and minister of visitation at Highland Park United Methodist. Rev. Davis received an Associate’s Degree from Spartanburg Junior College, received a BA from Coker College by working and through a scholarship given by Spartanburg Junior College for the highest academic record in the graduating class. She received an M.ED. from the University of South Carolina with a major in counseling and administration.Her graduate studies were done at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at North Carolina State University at Raleigh, at the State University of Iowa, at St. Mary’s College in San Francisco, CA, at Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, at the University of New Hampshire and completed a course of studies at Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC. She served as an educator with Sherwood High School, Bishopville Elementary, Bethune High School, Harllee Elementary and at McClenaghan High School where she also served as Assistant Principal.She organized Timrod Elementary School and served as Principal, served as Interim Principal of Briggs Elementary, served as Principal of Moore Junior High School and as Principal of West Florence High School, was Director of Elementary and Middle School education for Florence School District One and served four years as Head Mistress of Darlington Academy. She was a member of the board, serving twice as President, for the Mental Health Association of Florence County, a member of the Florence County Association for the Mentally Retarded, a member of the board for the Pee Dee Mental Health Association, a member of the South Carolina Education Association, a member of the board of directors for the Department of Youth Services, a member of the board for the Boys Club of Florence, member of the Board of Trustees for the Department of Adult Corrections, member of the Alumni Board of Coker College, a charter member and past president of the Palmetto Teachers Association, supervisor for Student Teachers at Francis Marion University, past president for two terms with the Business and Professional Women’s Club and was selected twice as career woman of the year, was the recipient of the “First Distinguished Educator Award” presented by the South Carolina Education Association Citizenship Committee She was the recipient of the “Order of the Palmetto” presented by Governor Carroll Campbell, was the recipient of the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Florence Civitan Club, served two years as supervising counselor of two counselors in Darlington and Hartsville for the University of Georgia, attended Southeastern School of Alcohol Studies from the University of Georgia.She was a member of the United Teaching Profession, the National Guidance Association, the National Council of Social Studies, the National Association for Secondary Principals and Administrators, past president of the Palmetto State Teachers Association, member of the American and South Carolina Associations for Curriculum Development and a member of the South Carolina Association for Elementary Principals.
