Pauline Chris Palles Costas

September 30, 1926 — May 25, 2025

Florence

Pauline Chris Palles Costas, 98, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, after a brief stay at McLeod Hospice House, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on September 30, 1926, in Florence, Pauline was the daughter of the late Chris Mitchell Palles and Constantina Vasilakos. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pete Costas Sr.; her son, Pete Harry Costas Jr.; her brother, Mitchell C. Palles; and her sister, Aphrodite C. Palles.

Pauline lived a full and vibrant life, grounded in deep faith, service to others, and an unwavering devotion to her family. A proud graduate of Florence High School and Winthrop College, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was the first recipient of the prestigious Hellams Award, recognizing a senior at Winthrop for excellence in physical education. She began her teaching career in Spartanburg, SC, before returning to Florence with her husband, where they became beloved local business owners, opening The Beacon Drive-In and The Gangplank Seafood restaurants.

Pauline’s lifelong passion for sports and education was evident in everything she did. She carried the same spirit that earned her academic honors into her community, coaching Florence youth softball and basketball teams for many years and tirelessly supporting her children in their many sporting events. Her dedication to athletics—both as a mentor and a mother—left a lasting impact, culminating in her recent induction into the Florence Athletic Hall of Fame. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the stands, Pauline inspired those around her with her energy, encouragement, and love of the game.

While her professional and community achievements were many, Pauline’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends, cherishing every moment together and cultivating a life rich in love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

A devout member of the Greek Orthodox faith, Pauline was a founding member of the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church, where she served as a choir member, Parish Council President, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and was honored for being the Sunday School Director for 20 consecutive years. She was a charter member and a dedicated board member of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society as well as serving as president. Her steadfast service and spiritual leadership earned her numerous honors, including the Archangel Michael Honor Award, and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta Philoptochos Society, Inc. Lifetime of Service Award.

Pauline's legacy of love, strength, and faith continues through her children: John Pete Costas (Marti), Maria Costas (Hobart Robbins), Vicki Underwood (Al), and JoAnn Nance (Clyde); her grandchildren: John Costas (Michelle), Ashley Costas Young (Jody), Nicholas Costas (Nikki), Carson Nance, Emily Nance Edwards (Will), Jenna Nance Cooper (Caleb), and Win Underwood (Emily); and her 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
