Nicholas “Nick” Lee Palles, a native of Florence, SC and a resident of Mobile, AL. fell asleep to the Lord September 9, 2015. Nick-named “Cold Plate”, Nick was a 1945 graduate of Florence High School.A graduate of Clemson University in Electrical Engineering, Mr. Palles served the first 12 years of his career at the Georgetown, SC mill and in many more executive positions while employed a total of 34 years with International Paper Company.At the time of his retirement, his title was Manager of Control Engineering which included the Electrical, Instrumentation and Process Control divisions of Corporate Engineering.Mr. Palles was a registered Professional Engineer in South Carolina, Arkansas and Alabama.Mr. Palles was a charter member of the Civitan Club of Georgetown, SC and served on the Chamber of Commerce and several PTA and Country Club Boards. He was an active member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Mobile and served on the Parish Council for many years. He continued to manage building maintenance and electrical projects for the Church. He was awarded the Archangel Michael Award in 2003 by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta for exemplifying the true Orthodox Christian way of life by his deep faith, commitment, dedication and service to the Church and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Mr. Palles was a member of the American Hellenic Education and Progressive Association (AHEPA).He served as the Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of AHEPA, which sponsors senior housing for those in need.He was awarded Ahepan of the Year in 2002.He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in a MASH unit of the U.S. Army Medical Corp. as a radiology technician. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee M. Palles and Flora R. Palles, his brother, Mitchell “Mike” L. Palles, and his sister-in-law, Carolyn P. Palles. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sophia Beleos Palles; three sons, Lee N. Palles of Raleigh, NC, Theodore “Ted” P. Palles (Anne) of Dallas, TX and Harry N. Palles of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren, Kate Palles Vives (Francesc), Mary Palles Byers (Jacob), Sophia Palles, Nick Palles, George Palles, Grace Palles and Stephen Palles; one great-grandson, McCann James Byers, two nephews Lee M. Palles and Thomas E. Palles of Florence, SC and two nieces, Efthimia Beleos Ouzts of Rock Hill, SC and Athena Beleos of Burbank, CA.. A funeral service was held on September 12 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Mobile, AL.A visitation will be held at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home in Florence, SC on Saturday September 19, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at the Mt.
