Nathan Wesley "Doug" Williams Florence, SC Nathan Wesley "Doug" Williams, 83, of Florence, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Williams was born in Florence, a son of the late James Jackson and Ethel Hatchell Williams. He served in the Korean War from 1951-1953 with the United States Marine Corps. Doug began his broadcasting career in 1950 at Radio Station WOLS as staff announcer. In 1960 he began hosting the first live 90-minute talk show, "The Holiday Show" from the Holiday Inn Restaurant at the corner of Dargan Street and 301 South which aired five days a week until 1987 when WOLS left the airways. During his tenure at WOLS, Doug worked at television station WBTW-TV13 as a newscaster and weather reporter. While at WOLS, Doug was partly responsible for WOLS being awarded the Station of The Year award. He holds three keys to the city of Florence awarded by three different mayors. At the close of WOLS Doug began a live television broadcast from WELY- "The Doug Williams Show".. He was inducted into the SC Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Doug was also a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Mr. Williams is preceded in death by his parents; and by two brothers, Gene Williams, and Leroy Williams. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hatchell Williams, of Florence; a daughter, Debra Williams (Dennis) Nobles, of Florence; a special daughter, Diane De Vaughn (Chuck) Stokes, of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Tressie Williams of Florence; 2 grandchildren, Ilissa Nobles (Josh) Weaver, and Wesley Earl Nobles, both of Florence; a great-grandchild, Samantha Grace Weaver of Florence; and by a godchild, Melissa Rogers Purvis of Columbia. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00P.M. Sunday, June 24, 2012 Cornerstone Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
