Mattie Lee Spivey Kennedy, 78, of Florence, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 2, 2014. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Tabor City, NC, a daughter of the late Caleb Dal Spivey and Grace Munn Spivey.She was a devoted mother to her two children and was known as “Granny Grits” to her four grandchildren.She graduated from Florence High School and McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing. Mrs. Kennedy’s most loved job was rocking babies at Southside Baptist Church on weekdays.She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and an Avon lady.She could be found most days reading a good book, watching the Hallmark Channel, eating out, dancing with the vacuum and drinking Dr. Pepper.She lived her life, like she is now…surrounded by angels. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, James Rupert Kennedy, and her siblings, Pat Lee, Alma Spivey Shaw, Juanita Fipps, C.D. “Charlie” Spivey, Jr. and Mary Buffkin. Surviving are her children, Gail (Woody) Garrison and Jim Kennedy, both of Florence; her grandchildren, Brad (Kimberly) Kennedy, Blaine Kennedy and Megan and Emily Garrison; as are her siblings, Marie Huggins, Rufus “Buck” Spivey and Shelby Kennedy, all of Florence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Southside Baptist Church. Entombment will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
