Master Sergeant Jonathan David Burckhalter

MASTER SERGEANT JONATHAN DAVID BURCKHALTER FLORENCE, S.C. MASTER SERGEANT JONATHAN DAVID BURCKHALTER, 51, of Florence, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2013 in the McLeod Hospice House. Mr. Burckhalter was born in Charleston, S.C., a son of Ronald F. Burckhalter and the late Emma D'Angelo Burckhalter. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Francis Marion University and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Jonathan was a scout leader in Boy Scout Troop 476 and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He joined the South Carolina National Guard in 1994 and trained as a Calvary Scout.He served with the following units: Detachment 1 Headquarters Company 1/118th Infantry, Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 263rd Armor, Troop B 202 Calvary where he was activated for active duty for Operation Noble Eagle and deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, he rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class as Platoon Sergeant.Jonathan was promoted to First Sergeant of Company C 4/118 Infantry and was currently serving with Headquarters Company 4/118 Infantry as Operations Sergeant.His awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Combat Action Badge and he was an Order of St. George Recipient. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Cathy Johnson Burckhalter, his sons, Andrew and Daniel Burckhalter, all of Florence; his father of Charleston; his brother, J. Mark (Michelle) Burckhalter of Charleston; father and mother-in-law, Malcolm and Pat Johnson of Camden; and many other family members. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in Cornerstone Baptist Church. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in the Florence National Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 P.M. Monday at the Funeral Home.
