Mary John Economy, 91, formerly of Beaufort, SC, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2015. Miss Economy was born in Beaufort, SC, a daughter of the late John Paul Economy and Xanthippe Coclin Economy. She was a member of the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church in Florence, and previously at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, Savannah, Georgia. Although Mary was born in Beaufort, her family moved to Allendale when she was a child. After graduating from Allendale High School, Mary attended Winthrop College where she majored in Music. She also attended Juilliard. For a short while, Mary taught piano in Charleston, but returned to Beaufort, when her family moved back in the 1940’s. Mary taught piano from her home for many years to children who grew up and subsequently sent their children to take lessons from her. She was the Organist at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church for 45 years, and then became the Organist for St John’s Lutheran Church for 10 years. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Paul John Economy and nephew, John Paul (Johnny) Economy. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Phyllis P. Economy of Florence, nephew, Dr. George (Athena) Economy of Florence, great niece and nephew, Phyllis and Paul, and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church. A Beaufort Burial will follow at 4:00 pm in the St. Helena’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
