Mary Adair Baker, 81, of Florence, SC, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
She was born in Helsby, England, the daughter of the late Colen Clarence Adair and Ada Fletcher Adair. She was a devout wife and mother, who was present during her husband’s deployment to Vietnam. Mary worked as a public-school teacher for 40 years, which included Wilson High School and West Florence High School. Her love of teaching was reflected in her Bible study class, which she taught at the Leatherman Senior Center. Mary was an avid reader and had a book club she attended with other retired teachers. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who adored being with her grandchildren. She was a member at Hopewell Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served many positions, such as teaching Sunday school, at the church. Mary loved crafting and doing genealogy.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are her husband, of 59 years, John William Baker; daughters, Cathy (Ken) Garland and Melody (Heath) Grainger; sister, Jacki (Terry) Madewell; grandchildren, Baker Garland, Trey Garland, and Wyatt Grainger; and special friends, Dr. Margaret “Meg” Hoffmeyer and Harriett Whitlock.
Memorials may be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 5314 Old River Road, Florence, SC 29505.
The family would like to thank McLeod Hospice House for their compassionate care.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Hopewell Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, August 29,2026, at the church.
