Martha Jane Hattaway Smith Conway, SC Martha Jane Hattaway Smith (Jane), formerly of Florence, entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on January 19, 2011 at Conway Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Smith leaves her husband, William Monroe Smith; three children – Shannon Smith Erickson (Kendall), Norman Monroe Smith (Sue), and Miriam Smith Fulghum (Stephen); four grandchildren – Mariah Lauren Erickson, Joshua Kendall Erickson, Emily Catherine Fulghum and William Stephen Fulghum. The family will host a visitation at 6 – 8 in the evening on Friday, January 21, 2011 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home with the funeral service to be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 in the morning at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Florence, SC with a private interment at the National Cemetery in Florence. Mrs. Smith was born on November 9, 1934 in Savannah, Georgia, to Helen Walling Hattaway and Albert Mayo Hattaway. After her father’s tragic death in 1940, Jane, her mother, and brother lived in 13 cities in 12 years as her mother took jobs all around the southeast in order to single-handedly raise her children. Jane and Monroe met in Winston Salem, NC where Jane’s mother had moved after marrying Norman Blanchard Bennett (affectionately known as “Pop”). Monroe joined the U.S. Army and went to fight in the Korean War and Jane waited at home.On May 15, 1954, Jane and Monroe married and the rest, as they say, is history. Having settled in Florence, SC, Jane enjoyed working for Aiken & Co. as a Realtor and later owned and operated “The Food Smith’s” catering and restaurant. When Monroe became ill in 1983, Jane returned to school and earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree. She worked at Heritage Home and Presbyterian Home until she retired. During retirement, she and Monroe enjoyed RV camping at Edisto Beach State Park- her all time favorite place to be. A member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church for 43 years, Jane enjoyed serving as Sunday school teacher, Brownie Troop Leader, and often shared her wonderful cooking talents. She was a member of The Daughters of the King, Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, and especially enjoyed contributing to the All Saints’ cookbooks. Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Albert Mayo Hattaway, her niece, Emily Julia Hattaway and a host of beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
