Malcolm G. Rogers, Jr., 98, of Florence, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018. Mr. Rogers was born in Fort Mill, SC, on March 21, 1920, to Malcolm G. Rogers, Sr. and Daisy Campbell Rogers. He graduated from Fort Mill High School and attended the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill.He volunteered for military service after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while at UNC.He served with Army Air Corps Intelligence, 680th Bombardment Squadron (VH), in the Pacific Theater of Operations. At the end of WWII, he attended the Medical College of S.C., graduating with honors, with a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy. He was elected to membership in Rho Chi National Scholastic Honor Society. He comes from a family with a history of duty and military service.His dad served with the Fifth Marines in WWI and was wounded in the Argonne Forest Battle in France.He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.His brother, Thomas, was a medic in the Army during WWII, serving in the European Theater on a hospital train.His nephew, Robert Rogers, was a West Point Graduate and was an officer in the Army and a Military Attache in the Diplomatic Corps.His Uncle Sam was a career Air Force Veteran, retiring with the rank of Major. Mr. Rogers was employed by the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1950. He served for 35 years and was Executive Sales Director for the Southern Region when he retired in 1985.During his tenure of service, he was Sales Manager of the Year in 1968 and won the President’s Award in both 1966 and 1968 and received the W. E. Upjohn Award in 1968. He referred to it as “The Triple Crown”.He was a Distinguished Past President of the Florence Golden K Kiwanis Club and founder and editor of The Monthly Messenger. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and President of the Lawson Rain Sunday School Class.He also served on the Christian Life Center Building Committee and was Chairman of the Sanctuary Renovation Committee.Mr. Rogers was a volunteer for the Mercy Medicine Clinic, serving as Board Member and Chief Financial Officer.He was a member of the American Legion and a life-long member of the UNC General Alumni Association. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elma Rogers, who died in 2007 and his brothers, Thomas and Charles. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Susan R. Davis (Hill); grandsons, Caleb Malcolm Davis, Benjamin Joel Davis and Stuart Marion Davis; and sister, Mrs. Peggy Goodman of Knoxville, TN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 30, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Sunday at the church.
