Lynn Winfield Brown, 93, died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at his home in Columbia, SC. Born in Raleigh, NC, in 1917, he was the son of the late Howard Wayne Brown and the late Ida Phillips Brown of Raleigh, NC. After completing studies at King’s Business College in 1937, Lynn joined Carolina Power & Light Company in Dunn, NC. Following several promotions, he found himself in Florence, SC, in 1948, where he met his future wife, Helen W. Creamer, whom he married in 1951. Lynn W. Brown worked for Carolina Power & Light Company (now Progress Energy) until 1982, when he retired. As the Director of Employee Relations of the Southern Division for nearly 20 of those 45 years, Lynn diligently and compassionately looked after the needs of over 700 active and retired employees. Lynn Brown was deeply involved in the life of his home church, Central United Methodist Church of Florence, SC.For over 50 years, he served faithfully as a greeter; member of the board of stewards, administrative board, and choir; chairman of the camp committee; head of the lay personnel committee; and secretary/treasurer of the Spiritual Guidance Sunday School Class. His kind and generous spirit permeated everything and everyone he touched. Community commitment was important to him as well. Lynn was a charter member of the Florence Optimist Club, acting as secretary/treasurer from 1952-1982. He enthusiastically manned the Optimist fair booth and Christmas tree lot each year, knowing that every dollar earned went towards "Bringing Out the Best in Kids” through a variety of community service projects. Lynn is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen C. Brown, of Columbia, SC; brother, Walter P. Brown, of Carey, NC;son and daughter-in-law, L. Winfield Brown, Jr., and Nancy Cockfield Brown, of Florence, SC; daughters, M. Ansley Brown, Rev. H. Marie Brown, and Elaine M. Brown, of Columbia, SC; and grandson, Kyle A. Brown, of Charleston, SC. Visitation will be held Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, 2402 South Irby Street, Florence, SC, from 10:00 a.m.–noon, followed by a brief service of remembrance. A private, family-only graveside service will take place afterwards at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Marie Brown Ministries, P.O.
