A native of Latta, Lelia Lee McRae was born on February 5, 1946, to the late Sallie Graham McRae and Rufus McRae.
Lelia was known for her strong personality—strict, blunt, yet undeniably kind and sweet. She played no games and never bit her tongue, always speaking her truth regardless of who you were. Still, she was a woman with a heart full of love, always willing to help anyone in need. What many will remember most is her deep love for people, her selfless nature, and her constant willingness to give of herself.
An excellent seamstress and an extraordinary cook, Lelia’s meals were nothing short of amazing. Her proudest accomplishment was her family. Over the years, she raised many children, turning strangers into family through her caregiving and unconditional love. She believed strongly that setbacks should never determine one’s destiny and lived her life as a true go-getter.
Though not an active member of a particular church, Lelia maintained a strong personal relationship with God and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In her quiet moments, she found joy in planting flowers and tending to her garden.
In addition to her parents, Lelia was preceded in death by her ex-husband, David L. Hanna, Sr.; special friend, James Wilson; grandson, Antron Hanna; great-grandson, Zane Sebastian Burgess; two sisters; and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Rebecca “Becky” Graham (Anthony) of Lamar, SC; Sharon Moneak Hanna of Florence, SC; David LaFon Hanna, Jr. of Lake City, SC; Linda Hanna of Florence, SC; Christina Savannah Hanna of Charleston, SC; Christopher Michael Hanna of North Carolina; and Wynter Selena Hanna of Florence, SC.
She also leaves behind three generations she helped raise: Latoya Denise Hanna (granddaughter), Ziamond Desmond Faith Hanna (great-granddaughter), and Legend Shimir Davis (great-great-grandson), affectionately known to her as her “Pepper.”
Surviving siblings include her sister, Drucilla Lorene McRae, and her brother, Melvin “Uncle Bo” McRae, along with their families. She is also survived by a very special friend and relative, Betty J. Speights, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
Lelia McRae Hanna leaves a legacy of honesty, resilience, love, and service that will live on through all who were blessed to know her.
