JOHN P “J.P.” WATSON, 92, of Florence, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Presbyterian Home after an illness. Mr. Watson was born in Columbus County, NC, a son of the late Glen Franklin and Bessie Ivey Watson. As a member of “Our Greatest Generation”, he was stationed with the US Navy at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack occurred. After serving his country during WWII, he retired from Imperial Tobacco Market. He was a member of the Nichols Masonic Lodge, and was a longtime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he had served as Head of the Church Brotherhood. “Pa”, as his family and friends referred to him, was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing and shrimping, and loved to drive his tractor on the farm. He was a very positive person, always cutting up with family and friends, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel.
