John Scaturro, Sr., 88, of Florence, passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mr. Scaturro was born in Irvington, NJ, son of the late Philip Scaturro and Anna Balsamo Scaturro.He was a US Army veteran of World War II and had been the production Manager at Union Carbide and retired after 37 years of service.He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and did volunteer work in Florence with the Habitat for Humanity and the United Way. He also volunteered as an arbitrator for the Department of Juvenile Justice as well as served as a mentor and tutor at Timrod Elementary School. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Romano Scaturro of Florence; son, John (Bradley G.) Scaturro, Jr. of Florence; daughter, Debbie Buchman of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Kristen and Kaylyn Scaturro and Alex, Savannah and Emma Buchman; nieces and nephews and their families, Jeanette, Phyllis, Michael, Ann, Anthony, Lou, Phillip, Gary and Betty Ann. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Josephine Gromack, and his brothers, Thomas Scaturro, Charles Scaturro, and Salvatore Scaturro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 – 7 PM Sunday at the funeral home with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 7:00 in the funeral home chapel.
