JERRY GORDON HINER FLORENCE, SC Jerry Gordon Hiner, 89, of Florence, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017. Mr. Hiner was born in Cincinnati, OH, a son of the late Gordon Hiner and Helen Harris Hiner.He attended Bronxville High School in New York and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.He was a 2nd Lieutenant US Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.After the war, he lived in New York City, Charlotte, NC and then retired in Lake Worth, FL.In Lake Worth, he volunteered many years with Mended Hearts and was recognized for his service within the organization for his work.He was also a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church there.In 2014, he moved to Florence, SC to be closer to his children and resided at Elmcroft Assisted Living. He was an avid writer, especially in regards to his book about his time in Korea and loved sharing his various stories with people.At Elmcroft on Thursdays, he would read excerpts from these stories to the other residents.Jerry also had a lifelong love and appreciation for all things musical.He was known for his sunny personality, his positive outlook on life and was most proud of his children, Judy and Jimmy.He was extremely supportive of all their endeavors. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his son, Jimmy (Lisa) Hiner of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Judy (Steve) Rummage of Florence; his former spouse, Peggy Cox of Dunnellon, FL; former sister-in-law, Gracie Kattenhorn of Charlotte, NC and a very dear family friend, Janice Branham of Camden, SC. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s own choosing. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and love to all the employees of Elmcroft for their aide with Jerry, as well as the residents and caregivers that have become a second family to them. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel with the family receiving friends from 1 – 2 PM prior to the service.
