James W Grooms Florence, SC James W. Grooms, 72, of Florence SC, departed this earthly life on September 30, 2010 surrounded by his family at McLeod Regional Medical Center.Our most giving and loving husband, father, papa, and friend slipped through our arms into eternal peace to forever be with his Lord. Born in Boulogne Florida, he was the son of and preceded in death by his mother Icie Jane and stepfather Clarence Rozier of Waynesville GA; father Eddie Grooms of Jacksonville, FL; and brothers Harry and Calvin Grooms. He faithfully served God and his country.He served honorably for 22 years in the Marine Corps, entering in 1956 at the age of 17, retiring in 1978 as a Chief Warrant Officer.From 1978-1989, he owned Grooms Electric Company in Beaufort SC.From 1990-2000, he worked for the US State Department.During his retirement, he built houses in the Florence area. He was a longstanding member of the Beaufort Church of God, and then Effingham Church of God after he retired. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bobbie Grooms; three daughters, Brenda Childers (Donald) of Hartsville; Karen Gartzke of Effingham; and Carol Thomason (Chris) of Pensacola, FL; a son, James W. Grooms II (Jeniffer) of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Cayce Childers (Justin)Mooneyhan and Tamara Childers; Chase and Spencer Gartzke; Jeffrey, Ethen, and Holden Holliday; Anna and Olivia Thomason; Jessica, Emily, Samantha, and Jamie Grooms;a great-granddaughter, Haven Mooneyhan; his youngest brother, Kenny Grooms of Waynesville, GA; two aunts, Myrtle Tyre of Waycross, GA and Bobbie Hite of Atkinson, GA. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 4th at 11:30 AM at the Effingham Church of God with interment to follow at 1:00 PM at the Florence National Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of CWO-3 James Grooms, USMC-Retired to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.Address for card is 237 McLaughlin Rd, Effingham, SC 29541 or to the Church of God Home For Children in Mauldin SC.Checks can be made payable to the Effingham Church of God (HFC) at 149 McLaughlin Rd, Effingham, SC 29541. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Sunday, October 3rd at the Effingham Church of God.
