James Alwyn "Al" Lewis

James Alwyn “Al” Lewis, 80, died Friday, December 11, 2015 in Columbia after an illness. He was born in Mullins, SC on September 20, 1935, the son of the late JD and Gaynell Brumbles Lewis. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 45 years, Jo Ann Scott Lewis. He is survived by his son Richard Todd “Ricky” (Michele) Lewis of Columbia, SC. A graduate of Mullins High School Mr. Lewis served in the Mullins National Guard for 12 years. He had a long career in appliance sales, was a radio disc jockey, and a sports commentator. He was active with youth sports, coached football and baseball in Florence, SC. He was president of the Florence Elks Baseball League and served on the board for 10 years. The baseball field at Maple Park was named after him and June 11, 1982 was declared Al Lewis Day in Florence. After moving to Columbia, Mr. Lewis was very active in his church, Windsor United Methodist. He served on the trustee’s board for 3 years and as Chairman for two. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 14 at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, 2402 S. Irby St., Florence, SC. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 1:00 prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 110 Ministry Dr, Irmo, SC 29063 or Windsor United Methodist Church, 9500 Windsor Lake Blvd, Columbia, SC 29223.
