James H. Owens

James H. "Sambo" Owens Effingham, SC James H. "Sambo" Owens, 89, of Effingham, passed away on August 28, 2012 in a local health care facility after an illness. Mr. Owens was born in Florence, Co., a son of the late Henry and Lois Carraway Owens.He served his country in the US Navy, having served during WWII.He retired from Central Oil Company and was a member of Lebanon Free Will Baptist Church. He is preceded in death in addition to his parents by a son, Randy Owens, who died in 1999; three brothers, Charles "Buck" Owens, Richard Owens, & Luie Owens; and a sister, Elma Lee Defee. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Doris McKnight Owens; a daughter, Kathy (Andy) Ward of Effingham; two sons, Tommy (Karen) Owens of Conway & Terry (Brenda) Owens of Timmonsville; three sisters, Ruby Jordan & Grace Allen both of Effingham & Elvie Phillips of NC; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, August 30, 2012 in the chapel of Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.Burial will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lebanon Building Fund, 7001 Friendfield Road, Effingham, SC 29541. The family will receive friends from 2-3 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.
