Hilda Brown Griffin

Hilda Brown Griffin was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wake County, on May 3, 1931, the middle child and only daughter to Titus and Blanche Brown.Monday, March 14, a beautiful day, Hilda was taken quietly to be with the Lord. Several family members were at the bedside, including her three children, sons, Tommy Griffin and Mickey Griffin, and daughter, Jo Anne Griffin Smith. She will be remembered by her children and grandchildren as funny, irreverent at times, unpredictable, loving and loud.She enjoyed a good story and frequently related events from her childhood employing the vernacular of the characters that had everyone laughing.Her often old-time Southern way of speaking was passed about in the family and now will always be a loving remembrance. Hilda and (late) husband Gilbert moved to Florence in 1964.She quickly got a job with Courts & Company, part of the NY Stock Exchange, in downtown Florence. Even though the company changed hands several times over the years, Hilda remained with them for 26 years until her retirement in 1990.She loved her job and the people she met there, especially those with whom she worked. After retiring, she and Gilbert enjoyed traveling.The Church became an important part of Hilda’s life in later years and she developed a deeper relationship with the Lord.Her last Sunday School teacher, Clyde Turner, was a personal favorite and a great friend to all of those in her class.Those of us her knew and loved her, know that she is bending God’s ear right now, and that is a great comfort. She is survived by her three children: Gilbert Tommy Griffin (Debbie Williams Griffin) of Florence, SC; Jo Anne Griffin Smith (Roy Smith) of Jacksonville, NC; and James Michael Griffin (Kelly Wilson) of Hartsville, SC;Two brothers, James Rogers Brown, (Marie Brown) and Titus Leon Brown (Judy Brown), of Apex, NC, and Raleigh, NC, respectively;seven grandchildren, Christopher Hart Hubbard (Julia Horton Hubbard) of Atlanta, GA; Whitney Griffin Robertson of Laurens, SC;Rachel Smith Parker (Daniel Parker) of Nashville, TN; Marshall Tommy Griffin (Jennifer Murr Griffin) of Roswell, GA; Lindsey Griffin Adams (Blake Adams) of Darlington, SC;Michael Sterling Griffin (Christie Blair Griffin) of Greenville, SC; and, Meredith Ansley Smith, of Columbia, SC. Hilda was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren:Mason, Madeline and Morgan Hubbard, Clara Robertson, Evey and Lyla Griffin, Logan Adams, and coming May, 2016, Caroline Parker. Both visitation and the funeral service will be held at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, 2402 S. Irby Street, Florence, South Carolina,on Thursday, March 17, 2016, beginning with visitation at 1:00 p.m., and funeral services at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations to Southside Baptist Church, 1356 Pineland Drive, Florence, SC29505, would be appreciated.
