Glenn John Matthews, of Florence, SC, passed away on August 9, 2025, surrounded by his family after a private battle with cancer.
Born in New Jersey, his family moved to Florence, SC when he was five years old.
After graduating from Francis Marion University, Glenn worked as an accomplished CPA and CFO for several companies. He eventually created his own firm, where he was dedicated to meeting the needs of his clients with honesty and integrity for over 20 years.
Glenn enjoyed golfing, watching the Gamecocks play football, playing poker with his buddies, and using his dry, witty humor to craft the perfect joke. He was also talented in the kitchen and his family often joked he could have a secondary career as a chef.
More than anything, Glenn was proud of his family. He was raised in a lively family where he took his role as eldest son and big brother seriously. He was a fierce protector and provider. Glenn would say that his greatest accomplishment in life was convincing Virginia to marry him. He loved her with no pretense or expectation. By God’s grace, they enjoyed 40 years of marriage. Undoubtedly, Glenn’s pride and joy was his daughter, Alison. He cherished her in more ways than she can count.
Glenn is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia Matthews; daughter, Alison Matthews; parents, John and Dot Matthews; siblings, Gary (Mary) Matthews, Kenny (Cassy) Matthews; Keith (Jennifer) Matthews, Lynn (Jody) Smith, Amanda Cameron, Timothy Matthews; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A memorial service to celebrate Glenn’s life will take place at 3 PM on Thursday, August 14th at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends before the service from 2-3 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to one of the local charities Glenn supported, Lighthouse Ministries and House of Hope.
