George J. Hammond

GEORGE J. HAMMOND FLORENCE, SC GEORGE J. HAMMOND, 94, of Florence, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the McLeod Hospice House after an illness. Mr. Hammond was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on April 27, 1919, the son of the late Edward and Cathrine Bowers Hammond.He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 – 1945.He moved to Florence, SC in 1948 and retired from the ACL-SCL Railroad in 1982.He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, a devoted Bible student and an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Doris Lewis Hammond of Florence; daughter, Virginia (Dargan) Ervin of Florence; sister, Mrs. J. Napier of Orleans, Ontario, Canada; two sisters-in-law, Norma L. Phillips of Florence and Lillian (Cliff) Burchette of Hallsboro, NC and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 26, 2013 at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff of the 10th floor at the McLeod Pavilion and at the McLeod Hospice House for their care and kindness during Mr. Hammond’s stay with them.
