Garland Lee Bernard, 89, of Pamplico, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016 after a brief illness. Mr. Bernard was born in Danville, VA, a son of the late Charles and Louise Bernard. He was married to Nell Keefe Bernard for 67 years and was a devoted father to Cynthia (Frank) Munn and Carolyn McGaha. He was lovingly called “PaPa” by his four grandchildren, Chip Munn, Johnathan (Allison) Munn, Amy (Pete) Loper, Pam Bowers, and twelve great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by one brother, Tom Bernard and a sister, Betty Poe. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Bernard, Jr., Bill Bernard and Sam Bernard; and by two sisters, Martha Bernard and Dorothy Johnson; and a son in law, Dean McGaha. Mr. Bernard was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Navy. He retired from American Tobacco Company after forty-three years. He had been a member of the Pamplico Lions’ Club for many years, and was a very active member and Lifetime Deacon of First Baptist Church in Pamplico. During his later years he enjoyed singing in the choir, attending Mens’ Bible study, and visiting in local nursing homes. He was quick-witted and made many new friends during the years he and his wife attended Carolinas Cardiac Rehab. He will be best remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 21, 2016 in the First Baptist Church in Pamplico. Burial will follow in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. A time of visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
