Florence

Dr. Coleen Woodham Finklea, 73, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026.

Born on January 25, 1953, and raised in Florence, South Carolina, Coleen dedicated her life to education, service, and family. A graduate of West Florence High School, she earned degrees from Francis Marion University and later received her Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina. As a teacher and principal in several Pee Dee school districts, as well as in private education, she spent her career shaping the lives of countless students. Former students often remembered her as an exceptional teacher whose dedication and encouragement left a lasting impression.

Among the many blessings of her career were the lasting friendships she developed with her colleagues while working in Hardeeville. Those relationships remained an important part of her life long after retirement and were a testament to the genuine kindness, respect, and encouragement she shared with those around her. She retired at the age of 55 after a distinguished career in education.

Coleen was married to the love of her life, Bryant Allen Finklea, for 52 years. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and caring for others. She is survived by her husband, Bryant Allen Finklea; her daughter, Casey Norris (Bradley); and her beloved grandchildren, Coley and Holden Norris

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Coleen will be remembered for her servant’s heart. She was the kind of person who never hesitated to help someone in need and found joy in caring for others. An accomplished cook, she delighted in preparing meals for family and friends, and anyone fortunate enough to receive an invitation to her table knew they were in for something special.

Coleen had a lifelong love of cats and enjoyed traveling, with the Exumas in the Bahamas holding a special place in her heart. Whether exploring beautiful destinations, preparing a meal for loved ones, or offering a helping hand, she approached life with kindness, generosity, and grace.

Her legacy is one of love, service, and education. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, gifted educator, and loyal friend whose influence will continue to be felt through the many lives she touched.
