Dean Fafoutis, 67, of New York, NY, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025, in Florence, SC.
Dean was born on March 2, 1958, in Washington Heights, NY, to Angelo and Helen (Karavas) Fafoutis. He earned a B.A. in History from City College of New York, a Master’s Degree from the University of Arizona, and pursued his Doctorate at Indiana University. He went on to serve as a professor of American History at the University of Maryland, Salisbury campus, until 2012.
Dean will be remembered for his passion for history, politics, debate, books, Scrabble, and Risk. He was also an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered on the New York Knicks, Yankees, Giants, Jets, and Rangers—Go New York!
He is survived by his beloved mother, Helen; his siblings, Sofia Xanthos, Nicholas Fafoutis, and Mary Green; his nieces, Anna-Helene Feinsilver and Lydia Green; his grand-niece, Emily Feinsilver; and his grand-nephew, Matthew Feinsilver. He is also survived by his aunts and uncle, Maria and Peter Petmezas and Nina Lazarakis; his cousins, Terry Key and Eraklis Petmezas, and their families; many aunts, uncles, and cousins in Greece; and countless dear friends from every stage of his life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Angelo Fafoutis, and his beloved nephew, Peter Xanthos.
Trisagion and Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church, 2990 S. Cashua Drive, Florence, SC 29501. Burial will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens.
