David A. Evans

David A. Evans, 96, of Florence, SC, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Mr. Evans was born in Marion, SC, the son of Peter Cooper Evans and Margaret Layton Evans.He attended Marion High School and Marion Business School.He attended Wofford College and in 1941 he joined the US Corps of Engineers and spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone supervising the construction of fortifications in the Canal Zone.In 1944, he returned and joined the US Army where he spent one year as a social instructor with the Special Training Unit.The next year, he was an occupational counselor at the Army Separations Center at Fort Bragg.Upon leaving the Army in 1946, he owned and operated a grocery store in West Marion.In 1954, he went to work as a radiological engineer with the Savannah River Project.In 1956, he moved to Crystal River, FL and owned and operated a TV & Appliance Store until 1969.While in Crystal River, he served four years on the city council, two of which he was council president.Most of the time in Crystal River, he also served as fire chief of the fire department.In 1969 he moved to Leesburg, FL where he worked as Chief Engineer for Lake County Cablevision.He retired in 1982. Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Clarice; two daughters, Dale Wright of Aiken, SC and Anne Abel of Elgin, SC andone son, Craig, of Greenville, SC; and two step-daughters, Mary Elliott and Patricia Jordan, both of Florence. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger of Fruitland Park, FL and one daughter, Fran May, of Ocala, FL.He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Asa of Marion, SC and P.C. of Greenville, NC and one sister, Margaret Wood of Springhill, FL. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2016, at Dillon Congregational Holiness Church on Black Branch Road in Dillon.The family is being assisted by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
