Dal H. Felkel, age 91, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at McLeod Regional Center.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 14th at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence at 11:00 a.m.Friends are invited to join Mr. Felkel’s family in what we hope will be a celebration of a life well lived.Burial will follow in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Clarine O. Felkel, by his daughter Nancy F. Gatewood, and by his son Hollis (Chip) Felkel and daughter-in-law Shonna W. Felkel of Greenville, as well as three grandchildren, Marci Gatewood of Florence, and Ethan Felkel and Addison Felkel of Greenville (and Trish Taylor, a close family friend who he claimed as his own).Additionally, he is survived by two of his siblings, S. E. Felkel (Betty) of Hanahan and David M. Felkel (Annette) of Cameron, as well as his sister-in-law, Miriam Burris of Elloree, and a host of nieces and nephews whose lives he followed and cherished. Mr. Felkel was born in Calhoun County in 1924, the son of Hugo W. and Maybelle Stroman Felkel, and he was a graduate of Elloree High School where he played both basketball and baseball. He entered the US Army in 1942 and served as part of the 524th Airborne Division first as a Parachute Instructor and later with the Show Troops, where he was injured in a parachute accident.Following his service, he graduated from the University of South Carolina under the G.I. Bill, where he received a degree in Accounting in 1950. In 1963, after an initial stint with the IRS which brought him to Florence, he established Dal H. Felkel and Associates of Florence, which he later expanded to Kingstree. For over 50 years, he worked with an extensive number of personal and corporate clients throughout South Carolina. He continued to do so right up to the day prior to his passing, just as he wished. He overcame many recent health challenges with sheer will, and perhaps some stubbornness, because he said, “this is who I am, and this is what I do”. Throughout his lifetime, Dal Felkel was a very active and engaged member of his various church families. He served as Sunday School teacher to youth and adults, as a Deacon, and also as a member of numerous committees (FBC-Florence, FBC-Kingstree, and Ebenezer Baptist of Florence). The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Please sign the tribute wall for Mr. Felkel at the obit section of www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
