D. P. "Tilly" Thompson

Daniel Prentice “Tilly” Thompson, Sr., 87, of Florence, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. Tilly was born in Bennettsville, SC, a son of the late Thomas Luther Thompson, Sr. and Iona Doreen Reardon Thompson. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.He was Secretary/Treasurer of Thompson Muffler, Inc. and Thompson Properties and was on the Board of South State Bank.Tilly retired in 1997 as Partner/Manager at Belk after fifty-four years of service.Tilly owed his success and business acumen to his mentor and friend, Mr. R. T. Riley, who gave him a job at age fourteen.He was a member of the Bluff Club, Hampton Lodge #204 AFM, Omar Shrine, ROJ Court #113 and was a Gideon. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Jessie Ruth Cox Thompson; son, Daniel Prentice (Judy) Thompson, Jr. of Florence; daughters, Janet “Jan” Thompson (Richard) DeTemple of Florence and Kim Thompson (Derrick) Register of Florence; grandchildren, Daniel Prentice (Ashley) Thompson, III, Elizabeth “Betsy” Thompson Braddock; Ashley (Adrian) Hahey; and Sherri Register; great-grandchildren, Daniel Prentice Thompson, IV, Braden Tedder, Rylie Sperry and Ava Sperry; sister, Jessie Thompson Curry of Florence; brother, Thomas Luther Thompson, Jr. of Florence and special friends, Herbert Warren, Raymond Church, C. V. Flowers and Jack Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Elmore Thompson. Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2016.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Family will receive friends on Friday, August 12, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
