Borey Perkins

Borey Perkins, 90, of Florence, SC died Friday, December 12, 2014.Borey was the son of Joseph and Cora Cooper Perkins.Borey was born at home in Darlington County.Borey was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Dora Hewitt Perkins. He retired after 35 years from Koppers in 1990. Borey accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior while serving in the Air Force in Alberque, New Mexico. For approximately 20 years he directed the choir and led the singing at Grace Baptist Church.He had no musical training but was willing to serve.He got the job one Sunday while singing in the choir when Rev. Dabney turned around and looked at the choir and said, “Borey come up here and lead the singing” and the job was his. He is often fondly remembered for singing at weddings. Borey is survived by his children, Borey Lynn Perkins (Lynn) and James Elliott Perkins (Karen) of Florence, SC, Pamela Perkins Burtis (Mark) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Carol Elaine Perkins Inglis (Troy) of Rock Hill, SC, Borey Lynn Perkins, Jr. (Caroline), Chad Joseph Burtis and Alyssa Catherine Burtis, all of Columbia and a brother, Cecil Perkins (Evelyn) of Florence, SC. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Jernigan of Burlington, NC, and brothers, Raeford Perkins and Newton Perkins of Florence, SC. He taught us by example what was important; he loved Jesus, and made sure that we all knew Jesus. Funeral services will be at Grace Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Monday, December 15, 2014.Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
