Barry Edwin Mayes, Sr. Florence, SC Barry Edwin Mayes, Sr., 70, of Florence, passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2013 in a local hospital with his children by his side. Mr. Mayes was born in Marion County, a son of the late Edwin Nesmith Mayes and Vergie Inez Tucker Mayes Scott.He was employed by the USPS for 47 years and was a farmer his entire life.He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and was a Master Mason and member of Hampton Lodge #204.Mr. Mayes had an active role, during the Reagan administration, in supporting the bill to allow farm families to retain their tobacco allotments. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Andrew Scott. Surviving are his wife, Diana Mayes of Florence; three children, Barry Edwin Mayes, Jr. of Georgia, Janet Leigh Mayes (Chad) Kale of Effingham and Heather Lee Mayes of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Paeyton Alec Mayes, Colin Elias Mayes, and Nathan Patrick Kale; and a brother, Ronald Gene Scott. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, with a Christian Wake Service to follow at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
