Barbara Singletary Bryan, 87, of Florence, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Born in Florence County on February 4, 1938, she was a daughter of the late James Cornelius and Grace Bazen Singletary. A graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School and Coker College, Barbara served a long and dedicated career in education. She taught at Hannah-Pamplico and Hemingway High Schools before devoting 22 years to Johnsonville High School, from which she retired. During her tenure, she was a beloved mentor, sponsoring the Student Council, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and the school newspaper.
After retiring from teaching, she continued to serve her community as the church secretary for Pamplico Methodist Church. A woman of deep faith, she was a devoted member of Pamplico First Baptist Church for 42 years and later an active member of Greenwood Baptist Church, where she taught Adult Sunday School classes. Barbara’s meticulous nature and love for history shone through in one of her most cherished accomplishments: researching and writing the extensive histories of both Pamplico First Baptist and Greenwood Baptist Churches. She also enjoyed entertaining guests in her home, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her loving children: three daughters, Natalie Bryan Knight of Florence, S.C., Lori Bryan Ricard (Danny) of Pomaria, S.C., and Nicole Bryan (Kristin) of Darlington, S.C.; a son, Nathan Harllee Bryan, Jr. (Tammie) of Savannah, GA; five grandchildren: Brynn Elisabeth Rogers, Rhett Douglas Ricard (Morgan), Drew Landon Ricard, Tyler Mitchell East Bryan (Maria), and Ella Leona East Bryan; and a sister-in-law, Iris Singletary.
She is predeceased by her husband, Nathan Harllee Bryan, Sr., and her three brothers, James Singletary, William Singletry, and Donald Singletary.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Florence Memorial Gardens, 3320 S Cashua Drive, Florence, SC. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. Services are entrusted to Stoudemire-Dowling Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Greenwood Baptist Church, 2401 Claussen Road, Florence, SC 29501 or Pamplico First Baptist Church, 119 Hickory Street, Pamplico, SC 29583.
