On October 17th, 2025, one of God’s great teachers, Angela Mangum Roop, 75, was celebrated by a great cloud of witnesses as she ran through the gates of heaven and into the arms of Jesus! If you were one of her thousands of first-grade students, you, too, now raise your voices and call her “blessed.” Whether sharing the key to reading, re-creating the first Thanksgiving feast, or introducing a shared bunny named Cinderella, throughout her 28 years of teaching, she made magic in her classroom. Even after she retired from the Darlington County School District, her love followed her former students for years in the form of birthday cards, wedding gifts, and baby presents. She never forgot those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her students, and her teaching will remain legendary.
Ms. Roop graduated from Asheboro High School; she received her B.A. in Education from Francis Marion College in 1976 and earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Francis Marion College in 1984.
During her teaching tenure, she was nominated multiple times by her colleagues as the Teacher of the Year and, in the 1990s, received Darlington County School District’s coveted Making a Difference Award.
Of eternal significance is the fact that Angie knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and treasured her worship family at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Florence, SC. She was an ever-present light in a world of darkness. She embodied compassion, generosity, and thoughtfulness. She was a friend extraordinaire who readily shared laughter or wiped away tears. She will be greatly missed but would be the first to invite you to be sure to join her in heaven, her new place of residence.
She was born in 1950 to her loving parents, Atha C. and Graham Mangum. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Tom Roop, who was a Professor Emeritus at Francis Marion University. In addition, she joins in heaven her sister and brother-in-law, Diane M. and Johnny Duncan of Laurens, SC; her sister, Marilyn M. (Dennis) Lee, of Bluffton, SC; and nephew Larry D. (Julie) Lee, Jr., of Rincon, GA.
She is survived by her much-loved son, Jonathan Michael (Olivia) Roop, of Florence, SC, and a stepson, Timothy Jay (Katy) Roop of Charleston, SC. She leaves behind three nephews, John T. (Marllyn) Duncan, Jr. of Pendleton, SC; Jeff Duncan of Laurens County; and Charles J. (Charlotte) Lee of Garden City, GA; and niece Melody Duncan of Laurens County.
Angie cherished so many friendships, but the family wishes to thank Judy Flowers, Donna Vaughan, Suzanne Atkinson, Debbie Howell, Margarette Hewitt, Martha Bridgman, and Jane Hursey for their faithfulness in visiting during the last years of her life.
