On Friday June 26th at the early age of 58 and after a long fight with her illness, one of God’s brightest lights went finally dim. Just after noon, Amy Elizabeth Lewis passed gently at MUSC Charleston with her family around her holding her hands and kissing her face. Amy leaves a bereft husband, Byron Navey, daughters Taylor Davis and Ariel Davis, stepdaughter Gwyneth Navey and their young families as well as a stepson, Caleb Schnee and too many cousins, nephews, nieces, family, friends and colleagues to count. We all together feel the sadness in the newly empty space where she used to be. Over the course of her too few years, Amy touched so many lives and anyone who knows her will attest that she devoted her life to the service of others. A Registered Nurse for over 33 years, her selfless dedication to the relief of suffering made her final struggle feel so bitterly unfair and that much more difficult for us to accept, however Amy stood up to her illness bravely, fought hard, endured multiple procedures and treatments and kept her sense of hope and faith through the entire ordeal. She is the strongest woman we have ever known. She never asked for tears, and we should not cry for her now, but rejoice in her merciful deliverance from suffering and her long-awaited reunion with those gone before her: parents Sherrill S. Lewis and Shirley J. Gleason and sister Judy Moody.
For those that would join us in celebrating her blessed life, the family will hold a memorial service for Amy at Pisgah Methodist Church on Ebenezer Rd. on Thursday, July 9th at Four o’clock. We hope that all who knew and loved her will attend, but even if we do not see everyone, we ask that as often as each of you think of her, please pray to God that He might light her path on this long journey alone and that she will find her way safely home. And when you will, say her name out loud that jealous night will know it had no victory here, but that she lives on in our hearts, is an enduring presence in each of our ongoing days and sits even now by the side of our God watching over and patiently waiting for those she will always love.
