March 26, 1937 - September 5, 2021
Husband of 60 years, Father, Son, Brother, Uncle, Lover of Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, Child of God, Organ recipient, tinkerer, piddler, teller of good stories, discriminating dresser, fixer of everything, meticulous maintainer and mower of lawns, dispensary of wisdom and good advice and lover of the internal combustion engine (particularly Chevrolets); Burton Wayne Owens, Sr., of the upper Georgia Great Valley Owens's, passed away at 84 years of age on September 5th, 2021, at MUSC in Florence, SC. He was born one of 10 siblings to the humble and hard working Tempie Sevelle Deems and the heavy handed tenant farmer David Franklin Owens. He grew up agrarian, quit school at the 10th grade contributing, as did his siblings, to the sustenance of the family. He plowed with a mule at times, picked cotton by hand and lived as a boy in a house heated by fire and a wood stove and where one could count the chickens through the floorboard cracks. He knew how to grow things and how to preserve what he grew. He was not a waster of things or resources. He met Jesus and did his best to follow Him, as his own earthly father was absent. He was not an intellectual and he lived a simple, practical faith. He and his wife, Cassie, raised 3 children in a godly Christian home and provided more than their meager incomes warranted. In an effort to curb poor character in his children he spared not the rod when it was necessary. Mr. Owens was a proud veteran of the United States Army, he owned and operated service stations in his early working life and ended his career working in retail sales and management. He was the last of the 10 siblings and, in addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers; Roy, Kelly, Joy, Sr. and Darnell Owens, and his sisters; Christine Bishop, Wilma Edwards, Maggie Purser, Margie Holbrooks, and Lois Owens. He is survived by his wife, Cassie Luneau Owens; sons, Burton Owens, Jr. (Paula) of Florence and Derrick Owens (Chrissie) of Timmonsville; daughter, Lucrecia Weaver (Terry) of Effingham; grandchildren, Cristin Allred (Teddy), Anna Smith (Chris), Cassidy Richardson (Justin), David Owens (Hallie), Kaylee Driggers (Shawn), Kate Owens and Hope DeCosta (Laler, III); four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Blakley and Owen Allred and Laler DeCosta, IV. A redeemed soul, Burton Wayne Owens, Sr. has been set free the bondage of sin and the flesh and now walks by sight and not by faith. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 10, 2021, at Florence Baptist Temple. Burial will immediately follow at Florence National Cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at the Church. Memorials may be made to Florence Baptist Temple, 2308 South Irby Street, Florence, SC 29505. Please sign the tribute wall for the family at www.stoudenmiredowling.com.
